Paper begins as something familiar—a page, a book, a record of information. Yet when reduced to pulp, it becomes something entirely different: a fluid material capable of holding memory, gesture, color, texture, and form.

In this workshop, participants will explore paper pulp as both a sculptural and painterly material. Through hands-on experimentation, we will investigate how pulp can be poured, pressed, layered, cast, pigmented, stitched, and assembled into works that move between two and three dimensions.

Working with both recycled and handmade papers, we will consider the histories embedded within paper itself—from its cultural origins and methods of production to its role as a carrier of stories, knowledge, and memory. Participants will learn how discarded paper can be transformed into new forms, discovering the creative potential that exists within materials often overlooked or thrown away.

Several types of paper will be provided for use throughout the workshop. Participants are also encouraged to bring a small amount of paper that holds personal meaning—a letter, photocopy, drawing, receipt, book page, or handwritten note. These materials can be pulped and transformed, becoming part of the creative process. Through this act of transformation, paper becomes more than a medium; it becomes a vessel for memory, trace, and personal history.

Alongside technical demonstrations, discussions, and studio experimentation, participants will develop a personal visual language through material exploration and create a series of works that emerge directly from their relationship with paper.

No previous experience is required! Curiosity, experimentation, and a willingness to engage deeply with materials are encouraged.

Kathryn Cameron

Kathryn Cameron is a New York–based artist whose work explores the fragility of mind, body, and spirit through the symbolic language of shapes, forms, and color. Working with natural and repurposed materials such as paper, leather, wood, steel, and pure pigments, she investigates the profound interconnections between humanity and nature. Her practice is rooted in the colors, forms, textures, and rhythms found in both natural environments and architectural traditions across cultures, while also drawing upon the universal principles of sacred geometry as a unifying thread.

Cameron is a founding member of the New York School of the Arts and the HUB Center for the Arts, where she serves as exhibition curator, program director, and faculty member. Beyond her teaching in New York, she leads workshops and courses internationally, fostering cross-cultural exchange and material exploration. Most recently, she returned from artist residencies in Morocco and France, where she developed new bodies of work and presented two exhibitions of her latest sculptures and installations in the south of France.
